The history - how SOTM began

It was back in 2012 the idea of giving a Swimmer of the Month award to our Skills group was first thought of. The very first recipient in the March was Miss Amy Gilpin. The award doesn't go to the fastest swimmer in the squad but to someone who has shown enthusiasm, has a great attitude, good attendance, and of course results and times all count.

The Chairman Bob Wells has managed the award process, recycling old trophies donated back from previous members. The most poignant of these were from Sandra Bell, the Mother of Natalie Roussouw, who was a member of the club for many years before going of the University and getting married. Natalie and her husband were tragically both killed on their honeymoon by a tsunami. Henceforth all awards are named 'The Natalie Roussouw Trophy' in her memory.

All skills teachers and coaches vote each Month with the Squad leaders and Bob making the final decision (not an easy task some Months). The Trophy is presented poolside at the end of each month, the recipient receiving it together with a certificate to be kept for life. A copy of the certificate is displayed poolside and up on the club notice board, along with the photo being posted on the Clubs Facebook site.
